Why is this story significant to our understanding of UC Berkeley's place in American culture?

This story is significant to our understanding of UC Berkeley’s place in American culture for a number of reasons but two that stand out to me in particular. The first reason is because it shows that UC Berkeley was an institution that contributed to the political development of the country during the peak of political protests. The FSM accelerated the Civil Rights Movement and many other political movements that would take place on Sproul Plaza. The FSM and Sproul Plaza were mutually beneficial towards each other because the Sproul Plaza gave the FSM a location to prosper and the FSM developed Sproul Plaza into a place of activism. Another reason I believe this story is important is because it is a representation of the type of students that attend UC Berkeley. Although I may be biased, I believe UC Berkeley students are passionate, intellectual, and strive to create change for the betterment of themselves and others. That is what drew me to the University when deciding where I want to receive my education and I can honestly say that those students who came before me paved the way for me and my classmates to be able to create and advocate for change and what we believe!
